Link Popularity - Either you are in, or you're out... Reciprocal linking in a nutshell.
So, you have a DJ website, (or perhaps you are considering having me build you one), and you are wondering about link strategy...
If you have a website and you want it to be popular, you have to get some other websites to link to yours. Being online and wanting to show up in search engines is a little like a popularity contest. Not only does your site need to be relevant for key phrases that you hope will attract visitors, but your site needs to be considered somewhat of an authority on the topic.
Imagine if you will, that you are back in high school. As scary as that may seem, put yourself in this imaginary scenario: The student council just found out that their candidate for class president will be moving to another town and cannot run for president. They will need to find a new candidate. When they start thinking of new candidates to nominate, their decision to select certain individuals who fit the position will depend on many things, such as are they smart, do they have good grades, do they look good and yes... Like it or not - Are they popular? Who knows them and who are the people that know them?
It is much the same with your dj website. The party planning client is going to refer to a search engine and type in something along the lines of: "dj for wedding in my town". In a matter of milliseconds, the search engine considers which websites fit the query of "dj+wedding+my+town". Then, before those relevant sites get ranked from most likely to least likely fitting your search, they put them in order of importance based on popularity. They consider: Are any other websites that have anything to do with "dj+wedding" or "my town" linking to them? Lets pretend that Jimmy's DJ service has a couple of inbound links from a local my town reception hall and a link coming from a major dj directory, plus a couple of others coming from other djs. Perfect! Jimmy's DJ service is popular, so it gets considered very relevant and put on top of the pile of search results.
Of course that is an over-simplified explanation, but it makes the point, which is that in order to be considered popular enough to compete for top ranking positions on searches, it takes more than just the mere fact that you are a dj. Just like in the high school president analogy, in order to be considered a nominee, the people who are considered must be more than just smart, more than just a pretty face, more than just a good debater, etc... They need to be popular. Someone has to back up the claim, by saying "I was in math class with so and so and they are very smart", and another may say "he is not only smart, they are the starting quarterback on Varsity, so everyone knows them".
If You're a DJ with a Website, you need to have a link popularity strategy in place.
Link building is something that takes time. Do not expect everyone to know who you are or what you do and link to your website in a few weeks. That's just not gonna happen and if it does, it is unrealistic and your site may get banned or penalized. Just like in real life, becoming popular is a slow steady process of people who you have common interests with recognizing you and then respecting you enough to point someone else in your direction.
A good linking strategy is when you trade links with sites that have a similar topic as yours and relate to the same geographic area. This can be achieved by asking to reciprocate with other DJs in your area, major dj directories and wedding directories, photographers or other wedding vendors, dj organizations, etc. Just remember, it is not the quantity of links that matter, it is the quality of links that will determine whether or not search engines perceive your site to be popular. Having a few solid links like this will mean much more than having a hundred links from poker and gambling sites.
To make managing links easier, I recommend using Links Manager. I know that this is a total endorsement for one particular software company, but the fact is, that they are the only one I trust. Links are too important to leave to a software vendor or black hat seo company that does not care whether or not they permanently harm your search credibility. Links Manager is an extremely easy to use solution that makes link management actually manageable, plus it is made possible by a firm that has been around for over ten years and knows all the ins and outs of link strategy. What's their secret? Simple, just like mine - Play by the search engine's rules and you will win. Break the rules, or go against their guidelines and terms of service and be prepared to lose any decent position you ever had.
